Should Brewers go after Winn?
January 4th, 2010 | by adamburnett |The Brewers bench was a problem last season and on paper it still looks to have some holes. Craig Counsell was resigned to provide a solid bat off the bench and play around the infield. Jody Gerut is capable of playing all three outfield spots. The lefty outfielder played much better as the season wound down. He struggled mightily before coming over from the Padres in the trade for Tony Gwynn. I regularly keep track of what players are still available and who could potentially help the Brewers. Former Giants outfielder Randy Winn is still out on the market. He’s a career .286 hitter, that’s capable of playing all three outfield spots. A switch hitter with 9 consecutive seasons of double digit steals is a valuable commodity. If Carlos Gomez struggles at the plate, does Jody Gerut get worked into a platoon? Do you feel comfortable with Jody Gerut playing regularly?
Winn turns 36 later this season and is insistent on signing for a starting gig. The Diamondbacks were interested in the outfielder’s services, but couldn’t guarantee a starting job. Last season’s salary of near 10 million dollars isn’t going to help in negotiations. His price along with playing time demands will have to come way down if he’s going to find work soon. As the market dries up, Winn will have to figure out if he wants to continue his pursuit for a starting job or agree to come off the bench for a contender. I believe Winn could upgrade the Brewers bench for the right price.
