Brewers sign Vargas, Loe, and Treanor

The Brewers have come to terms with pitchers Claudio Vargas, Kameron Loe, and catcher Matt Treanor.  Vargas was a valuable asset in middle relief for the Crew.  Sending utility player Vinny Rottino for another arm in a beat up pen was a good move by general manager Doug Melvin.  Vargas is pitching in winter ball with the Aguilas Cibaenas of the Dominican League.  He’s gone 1-0 with 2 saves in 4 appearances totaling 6.1 innings.  Bringing him back on a one-year deal will help to shore up the middle relief.  I couldn’t stand watching him start games because he’s too dam slow on the mound.  Hopefully his career has taken a turn for the better coming out of the pen.    

Kameron Loe pitched in the majors with the Rangers and last season played in Japan.  He appeared in only 6 games before getting sent down to the Japanese minor leagues.  Loe had a 3.20 ERA in 6 appearances for Aguilas de Mexicali in the Mexican winter league.  Catcher Matt Treanor is known more for his famous wife volleyball star Misty May, than his playing career.  He’s a right handed hitting backstop that received time with the Marlins.  A hip injury caused him to miss most of the season for the Tigers.  His chances of making the big league club out of spring training are tough with the amount of depth at the position.

General Manager Doug Melvin has signed players to fill out the depth of the organization and provide some competition in spring training.  I would still like to see the Brewers make changes to the starting rotation.  I’m not too excited about a rotation of Gallardo, Wolf, Parra, Suppan, and Bush.  Changing out Looper for Wolf is an upgrade, but I wanted more changes to the rotation.  We’ll see what else they do there’s still some intriguing pitchers on the market.
