Cameron signs with Red Sox

December 15th, 2009 | by adamburnett |

The Red Sox have signed former Brewers centerfielder Mike Cameron to a 2 year deal.  With the addition of Jeremy Hermida earlier this offseason what Cameron’s official role will be is yet to be determined.  Jacoby Ellsbury plays in center and J.D. Drew plays in right field when he’s not the DH.  I would anticipate the 3 time gold glove winner playing in left field, while possibly seeing time in all three outfield spots and at DH.  I can see manager Terry Francona rotating the four players around to keep them fresh for the whole season.  The 37 year-old outfielder hit .250 with 24 bombs and 70 RBI’s with the Brewers last season.

In 1,829 Major League games, Cameron has a .250 average with 265 homers, 926 RBIs and a .340 on-base percentage.  His career path has gone from the White Sox, Reds, Mariners, Mets, Padres, and Brewers.  Cameron has been a solid combo of power and speed with 8 seasons over 20 bombs and 12 years of double digit steals.  Last years 7 stolen bases was a product of playing for Ken Macha, not diminishing skills.  I would expect to see his steals totals increase with the BoSox.
