Brewers in the Arizona Fall League

November 30th, 2009 | by adamburnett |

The Milwaukee Brewers sent 8 players to play for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. The Javelinas won the AFL Championship with catcher Jonathon Lucroy and left-handed reliever Zack Braddock contributing to the 5-4 victory over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. The league ended before thanksgiving, but digging through all the box scores took me some time.  After looking through all the box scores Lucroy and Braddock were the two players from the Brewers that stood out in the AFL.  Some big names in the farm system worked out in Arizona with mixed results.  Centerfielder Lorenzo Cain and pitcher Mark Rogers made up for lost time due to injuries.  Here’s a short breakdown for how each player did in the Arizona Fall League.  With the Brewers letting Jason Kendall walk, Lucroy has been mentioned as a candidate for the catcher’s job in spring training.

Catcher Jonathon Lucroy batted .310 with 10 RBI in 58 at-bats. Struck out 11 times with 5 walks.  He threw out 8 of 16 base-stealers.  Went 1-4 with a run scored and 6 left on base in the AFL Championship Game.

Centerfielder Lorenzo Cain batted .242 in 68 at-bats with 21 strikeouts and 13 walks. The 8 stolen bases help to prove he’s getting past the leg injury.  Went 3-4 with 3 SB in one game against Peoria Seguaros.

3B Taylor Green hit .212 in 52 at-bats with 9 strikeouts and 9 walks.  The left-handed hitter’s 6 RBI’s came in 2 of his final 3 games. In one game against the Peoria Seguaros he hit his only homer and drove in 4.

RHP Omar Aguilar had a 7.11 ERA with an opponents batting avg. of .314 in 12.2 innings and 10 earned runs.  He gave up earned runs in 6 of his 9 appearances.

RHP Josh Butler went 3-2 with an 11.93 ERA with an opponents batting avg. of .429 with 30 hits and 19 earned runs in 14.1 innings.  He made a lot of progress in the Brewers system this year, but may have run out of gas in Arizona.

LHP Zack Braddock had 3 saves with a 5.25 ERA in 12 innings pitched.  In his last regular season appearance the 6’4” southpaw gave up 4 hits and 6 earned runs.  Picked up a hold and struck out 3 in an inning of work in AFL Championship Game.

RHP Mark Rogers had a 15.19 ERA in 8 games.  He gave up earned runs in of his 8 appearances.  Opponents batted .392 in 10.2 innings gave up 20 hits and 18 earned runs.

RHP Robert Wooten went 1-1 with a 5.00 ERA in 8 games.  He allowed earned runs in 2 of his 8 appearances.  In 9 innings of work he gave up 5 earned runs, while opponents batted .286.  He missed bats and didn’t give up free passes with 12 strikeouts and 1 walk.
